CASE STUDY: 2018 TO 2026
Google Accessibility & Disability Innovation (ADI): Driving Universal Inclusion as an Engine of Innovation
Google logo reimagined with accessibility symbols
Enterprise Compliance
EU VPAT Earned
Led the accessibility work that earned Security Command Center an EU VPAT in Q2 2023, directly unblocking billions in public sector contracts.
Community Scale
1,000+ Engaged Googlers
Spearheaded Regional Disability Alliance leadership, ADI Weeks, and inclusive live lab audits across 40+ product teams.
Role & Scope
UX Lead & Chapter Lead
Led physical Inclusive Lab setup in South Lake Union, established Cloud Accessibility Demo Program, and taught Accessibility Fundamentals curriculums.
Translating corporate accessibility missions into lived, community-led product breakthroughs at enterprise cloud scale.
Accessibility is frequently treated as a minor, post-launch compliance checklist rather than a foundational blueprint for innovation. At global enterprise scale, complex visual-spatial interfaces—such as security attack graphs, multi-step configuration wizards, and nested cloud directories—often exclude developers relying on assistive technologies like screen readers or keyboard navigation.
Executive Summary
“Operating under the core philosophy that ‘accessibility is an engine of innovation,’ we mobilized regional disability chapters, established the South Lake Union Inclusive Lab, and guided 40+ product teams through live screen-reader audits—ultimately securing the EU VPAT that unblocked billions in public sector contracts.”
By proving that clearing the path for people with disabilities ultimately clears the path for everyone else first, these initiatives embedded inclusive coding specifications and empathy-first practices across Google Cloud and civic infrastructure.

Earning the EU VPAT
Embed accessibility up-front across enterprise cloud consoles to earn an EU VPAT, unblocking multi-billion dollar public sector pipelines.
Uncovering core user needs for visual, motor, and cognitive adaptability in complex enterprise applications.
Live screen-reader audits and user testing in Google’s South Lake Union inclusive lab turned user-adaptability goals into actionable insights.
Navigable & Audible for Low/No Vision
Visual-spatial interfaces like attack graphs and nested directories must translate into logical text. Teams refactored visual graphs into keyboard treeviews, added programmatic focus shifts to wizards, and standardized disjointed definition lists into structured tables or hierarchical lists.
Readable & Zoomable for Magnification
Testing under 200%–400% screen magnification revealed fixed headers collapsed and overlapped. This drove cloud-wide refactoring to fluid responsiveness, contrast remediation, visible keyboard indicators, and safe tooltip positioning.
Operable for Keyboard & Motor Limitations
To support engineers unable to use a mouse, teams implemented cloud-wide keyboard shortcut systems, bypass links (“skip to main content”), and structured ARIA navigation landmarks to eliminate the need for users to tab through repetitive lists of hundreds of links.
Manageable for Cognitive Overload
To combat severe alert fatigue in high-volume security dashboards, designs introduced natural-language AI summaries above charts to explain risk instantly and prioritized query-based alert-filtering controls.
Leading Accessibility Academy coursework, regional Disability Alliance chapter, live assistive lab audits, and global civic sprints.
Spearheading regional, state-wide, and global accessibility initiatives provided structured training, built a team of local advocates, and fostered an enduring community focused on Google’s mission of universal accessibility.
Teaching Accessibility Courses & Providing Demos with Assistive Technologies
Taught accessibility classes to thousands of Googlers over several years, often with 50+ people per class, and created self-study guides used across Google. Designed and co-taught a 5-class Accessibility Academy curriculum covering Assistive Technology 101, Keyboard-Only Navigation, Demystifying A11y, Accessibility design specifications, and Solving Accessible UX Problems. Also guided more than 40 Google product teams through live VoiceOver and NVDA screen reader demos and audits in the Inclusive Design Lab.

Accessible UX & Web Fundamentals Masterclasses
Authored Accessibility Glearn masterclasses (“Designing Accessible UX” and “Web Accessibility Fundamentals”) training dozens of teams on translating visual DOMs into logical Accessibility Trees up-front.

Washington Disability Alliance Chapter Leadership
As chapter lead of Google’s Washington Disability Alliance, supported the local community of Googlers with disabilities and their allies. Hosted monthly Disability Alliance syncs and ERG lunches that gave Googlers a pathway to anonymously report accessibility challenges they faced at work. Turned those reports into action by opening tickets with facilities teams to improve office accessibility and connecting Googlers with accessibility tech support teams to improve the accessibility of software employees were required to use at work. This work was recognized with the WA Site Citizenship Award for Leadership.

Accessibility and Disability Innovation Week
Contributed to Google’s annual Accessibility and Disability Innovation (ADI) Week, first held as Accessibility Week and later as Accessibility and Disability Inclusion Week, starting in 2018, and helped organize it every year from 2019 through 2025. Served as lead organizer in 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2025, and helped expand it to a full ADI Month in 2023. The program began in Washington and grew to cover the Pacific Northwest as Google opened offices in Portland and more Googlers worked remotely. In 2024 alone, organized nine events that engaged more than 350 Googlers, including hands-on accessible design trainings, accessibility demos for product teams, and community events with partners like Guide Dogs for the Blind.

What accessibility leaders and partners said about the work.
“Lane, you have been an incredible and tireless advocate for accessibility and inclusive design for several years--but your work to stand up and run the Accessibility Demo Program, housed in South Lake Union’s new Inclusion Lab, truly goes above and beyond. This program helps build stakeholder empathy and a deeper understanding of how to improve Google Cloud’s accessible experiences. As one team put it: “it was absolutely essential to see the demo.... Hearing the screenreader and learning about the screenreader functions and how our choices on the eng and design side affect it was way more impactful than the training docs.””
UX Writer & Accessibility Advocate, Google Cloud Platform
“Lane composed and presented a comprehensive 2-hour “Designing Accessible User Experiences” training during Accessibility & Disability Innovation Week. She covered all topics (user needs, assistive technology functionality, accessibility specs, and more) in a clear and approachable presentation style, adding helpful insights from her extensive accessibility experience. Thank you for your work continuing the advocacy of [accessibility specs] during Accessibility & Disability Innovation week, Lane!”
Senior Interaction Designer, Alphabet Accessibility Academy
“Lane, thank you so much for leading Accessibility and Disability Inclusion Week for your site! You did an amazing job handling the challenges of a virtual event and made sure it was still a success! Thank you for all of your efforts!”
Lead for EMEA Accessibility and Disability Innovation, Google Products for All (Accessibility)
“Lane’s collaboration & leadership skills were critical to the success of the recent “Cities for All” design sprint. Lane was both thoughtful & creative in evaluating, selecting & setting up tools and designing building blocks for this sprint, which made it a breeze for both internal and external participants to contribute easily. She helped organize the panel with Disability Alliance ERG members, which was one of the most impactful sessions of this sprint. Lane also went above & beyond by stepping in to help one of the sprint teams with prototyping. Thank you Lane for your initiative & leadership towards the vision of inclusive & accessible cities.”
